I am hitting the Ping G20, with the TFC Tour shaft. My spin rate and launch angle are higher than I would like and am thinking of reshafting the club. I have read that Ping counterbalances their shafts. What does this mean? If i reshaft with an aftermarket shaft will it change the balance of the club?

Ping G20 Driver Review
- Joined: #2I have a G15 and had to reshaft also, I used a heavier shaft with less spin and cut it to 45, and thinking of cutting a little more and using a Winn Lite grip, but when I grip down a little it works very well, the ball-flight is alot lower, I got a Proforce Gold 75 for a few bucks on ebay and it really work well, if you intend also shortening the shaft you will have to do some calculating in advance if you don't want to be adding weights to the head or have a driver with a very light SW. It is claimed counter-balanced shafts can hit it farther, but this depends on getting one that fits right to your style and clubhead. I took a guess with the Proforce and it works fine, without getting a fitting its all a bit of guesswork. I saw some Graphite Design Tour AD YSQst shafts going at bargain prices on ebay, I was going to experiment with one of those in the G15 but last few times I hit it I had good results with the Proforce.

This results in what they call a high balance point, which in part requires a heavy head to get the swingweight up to normal. You don't need a counterweighted shaft to reshaft, just a shaft of appropriate weight to meet your length needs accounting for the heavier than typical 204 gram G20 head.
I reshafted a G20 last night. Used a 70S RIP Alpha for a fairly short 44.25' built length. Because the head is heavy, all I had to add was a small cut down tip weight to get to D4.5. It's often difficult to get an adequate swingweight using a short shaft unless a bunch of weight is added to the head. I used a .335 shaft along with a collared ferule and cut down brass shaft adapter. Shaft fit nice and tight without forcing anything. I tipped the shaft about 1/2' just for good measure since the head is heavy. Can't wait to hit it.

I don't think you will need any weight if you use a 70 gram shaft and build the club to 45'.- /discussion/comment/5180350/#Comment_5180350

Curious how you like the G20 with that shaft? I just got a great deal on a G20 and have RIP ą 70 and DI 6 laying around and trying to decide which one to try first. Didn't mind the 169 Tour shaft but prefer my driver at 45 or 44.75. Thanks- /discussion/comment/5290478/#Comment_5290478

I like the combo fine. The RIP holds up well to aggressive swings. I'm not a shaft snob in the least, and only bought the RIP because I got a good deal off ebay. I'm a fan of stiff feeling shafts, or said another way, I'm not overly sensitive to shaft 'feel' in general. Some people say the RIP is 'boardy' but frankly, I'm not sure what that means.- /discussion/comment/5291300/#Comment_5291300

The rip gamma is a counter-balanced version of the rip alpha. Supposedly not quite as low but close and with a touch softer feel. Great shaft that's frequently over-looked. I use it in my driver (not a ping though). The 'supposedly' above is because I haven't hit the alpha. Also, if you're looking for the 70 gm shaft, although there is no rip gamma 70 per say, the '60' is actually 69 gms.- /discussion/comment/5291718/#Comment_5291718
- Joined: #9Thanks. I really like the RIP a 70 shaft and glad to hear some good feedback with the G20 head. I have been pleasantly surprised with two limited range sessions so far even not liking the feel and gripping down an inch. Would be ok with playing the stock tour shaft but I don't really understand counter-balancing and don't know if I can butt trim the stock shaft or if that will screw it up. I would think with a 204g head the 70g RIP shaft would be a good fit at 45' or just under.

Counter-balanced or not doesn't affect trimming at all. You can butt trim with no problem.
Just think of a CB shaft as one where the manufacturers were able to move the center-of-gravity closer to the hands. This will only affect the end swing weight - and only a little. The 'purpose' was to be able to counteract, to some degree, the increased swingweight for 'newer' larger heavier heads.- /discussion/comment/5298052/#Comment_5298052
